A Strange Time To Shout
James 1:2
My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations.
Introduction
James, the earthly brother of Jesus, wrote this epistle. The advice he gives comes from his own experience. It also echoes many of the thoughts of the Beatitudes, especially Matthew 5:10-12.
The word temptation has two meanings. One is to entice to sin. The other has the meaning of trial, affliction, persecution, or suffering. The latter is the meaning of the word in our text.
James’ message is “counterintuitive.” He wants us to rejoice in times of trouble. It is only natural for an organism to avoid pain and seek pleasure. Since we are an “easy-does-it” age, which places a high value on comfort and convenience, these words fall heavier on our ears. Why should we shout in times of trouble? Let’s unpack this divine suitcase and get the beautiful garments out, and then the question will be answered. Let’s crack this theological nut and get to the kernel, and we will receive even more clarity.
Exposition
1. Strong Character Is Forged In Suffering.
(The only difference between coal and diamonds is the amount of pressure applied – both are pure carbon.)
2. Creativity Is Spawn In Suffering.
(The spirituals were composed in slavery. Many of the great hymns of the church were composed when the composer was suffering. Great Is Thy Faithfulness; Precious Lord, Take My Hand, just to name two.)
3. We Get Closer To God In Suffering.
(Psalm 119:71)
4. We Appreciate The Sustaining Power of God In Suffering.
(His Everlasting Arms Keep Us From Falling.)
5. Innocent Suffering Is Redemptive.
(This Is Why Jesus Went To The Cross.)
Closing Thoughts
We should rejoice when days of difficulty come on us. In them, we learn that our human strength is but weakness. Our human wisdom is but ignorance. Our righteousness is but filthy rags in His sight. Let’s go back to the words of Jesus in Matthew 5:10-12. Let’s also echo what the song writer said, “hallelujah anyhow.” I sing hallelujah anyhow, because I know where my help comes from. It comes from the Lord. Hallelujah anyhow!!!! Give God Glory! Give God All The Glory!
