Supply And Demand (God’s Divine Economy)

Order of Service

Deuteronomy 33:25b

And as thy days, so shall thy strength be.

Introduction

Israel was poised to enter the Promised Land. There was much excitement coupled with extreme fear and anxiety.  To ease their feelings of uncertainty and timidity, Moses lovingly rebuked them, encouraged them, and gave each tribe farewell blessings. Moses knew that he would not get there with them. He also knew the manna would cease to fall when the priests’ feet struck the waters of the Jordan River.

Each tribe received a different set of blessings, because God, through Moses, met them at their point of need. God is still meeting each of us at our point of need. He loves us the same, but he does not treat us the same. We all have different personalities, different needs, and different life circumstances. What medical doctor would prescribe the same pharmaceutical prescription for all of his or her patients?  Would the patient with a head cold get the same prescription as a cancer patient? Of course, not! Likewise, God knows how to provide the right medicine and in the right amount for each of us.

In our text, as Moses blessed the tribe of Asher, he told them that God would provide them strength to meet the needs of each day. “As thy days, so shall thy strength be.” This reminds me of how God’s divine economy of grace is different from our modern economies. The capitalist economy says when the demand or desire is high and the supply is low, the price of the good or service goes up. When the demand or desire is low and the supply is high, the price goes down. It is difficult to keep the correct balance between supply and demand. God’s economy says, whatever you need, I will supply it. The price will never fluctuate, because the price was paid once and for all on Calvary. Really, I should have reversed the wording and said, “Demand and Supply,” because whatever each day demands of us, we can rest assured that God will give us the strength to handle the situation. I will mention only a few of the many ways God gives us strength to meet the demands of each day. You can add your own list. That can be your homework assignment.

Exposition

1. Strength To Handle The Ordinary Things Of Life.

(The Daily Routine Can Be Stressful And Over Whelming.)

(Some Days Demand More Than Others.)

(Some Days Demand Special Strength - Even In Dealing With People.)

2. Strength To Carry Your Burdens.

(Sometimes, The Load Seems Too Heavy To Bear.)

(God Gives Patience As You Carry The Load.)

(God Keeps You Positive As You Carry The Load.)

3. Strength To Rejoice While You Are Suffering.

(Strength To Count Your Blessings In Spite Of Difficult Issues.)

   (Strength To Worship While Wounded.)

Closing Thoughts

I am of the theological belief that all of the blessings given to the various tribes, at various times in the Old Testament, now are available to all Christians as God sees the need.  Remember, God meets us at our points of need. So, we can gladly claim this blessing of the tribe of Asher.

I will close with the lyrics of a familiar postbellum spiritual:

“Jesus is on the main line; tell Him what you want.

Jesus is on the main line; tell Him what you want.

Jesus is on the main line; tell Him what you want.

You just call Him up and tell Him what you want.

If you need the strength to stand, tell Him what you want…

If you need your soul converted, tell Him what you want…

If you need the Holy Ghost, tell Him what you want…

If you need your body healed, tell Him what you want…

It you’re sick and wanna get well, tell Him what you want…

If you need some peace of mind, tell Him what you want…

If you’re tired and need some rest, tell Him what you want…

If you want to love everybody, tell Him what you want…

If you want your children blessed, tell Him what you want…

You just call Him up and tell Him what you want.”

(You can add your own unique verses while you are singing in the shower. Nobody will be there to make fun of your singing.)

Give God Glory! Give God All The Glory!
