A Great Lesson From A Chicken (A Mother’s Day Sermon)
This passage of Scripture is unique in many ways. Jesus uses a figure of speech to describe Himself in a way that is very strange and even awkward for us to repeat. We are used to quoting Him as He said He is the Good Shepherd. We are familiar with Him referring to Himself as the Bread of Life.
The Impact Of The Cross
We have just celebrated the resurrection of our Savior. Why go back so quickly to the sadness and horrors of the cross of Calvary. There are two reasons. The first reason is obvious. This is the scheduled communion Sunday for our congregation. Secondly, because, unapologetically, Christianity is the religion of the cross.
Celebrity Sightings
The greatest celebrity sightings of all times were the appearances of Christ between His resurrection and His ascension. Paul here is addressing several misunderstandings about the resurrection. His first step in clearing up these misunderstandings is to prove conclusively that the resurrection is a historical fact.
Risen Indeed Just As He Said (Resurrection Sunday)
More than a dozen times, Jesus told his disciples that He would be crucified, but that He would also rise again on the third day. After witnessing the cruelty of the Roman soldiers, the plotting of the religious leaders, his rejection by the people, and their knowledge of how brutal death by a Roman cross would be, they had lost all hope of His resurrection.
It's Different This Time
The entry of Jesus into Jerusalem, on what we now call Palm Sunday, was not His first time in that city. This trip was a signal change in the manner in which He had presented Himself to the people. Heretofore, Jesus had been careful to avoid publicity about His messiahship; now, He invited it.
A Blind Man With Perfect Vision
Jesus was on His way to Jerusalem. The proverbial rubber was about to meet the road. He was on His way to the Last Supper, to the agony in Gethsemane, to the betrayal of Judas, to the abandonment of ten disciples, to the denial of Peter, to the march to Calvary, to the cruel death of the cross.
The Savior's Survey
Ministry can be draining. For that matter, life can be draining – very draining. Sometimes, you need to be by yourself to recharge. Sometimes, you need to be with a small group to recharge. We all need quiet time with the Lord.
The Black Church - A Mystery Within A Mystery
The church is a mystery, and the Black church is a mystery within a mystery. It has been called the oasis in a desert of hatred, injustice, and racism. It has been called the backbone of our culture.
Stability In An Unstable World
We live in an unstable world. Just about everything is in a state of flux. Just about every aspect of our lives seems like a roller coaster ride, but life is not an amusement park.
The Call Of The Cross
All through our Lord’s ministry, he heard the call of the cross. However, as Jesus neared the sunset of His earthly ministry, He seemed to hear more loudly and clearly the call of the cross and His mission to provide the way to eternal life. As we shall soon commemorate Holy Communion, we too should hear again the call of the cross.
Rivers That Tell Our Stories
Our ancestors were on to something deeper than they realized. The course of human history is like a river, sometimes placid, sometimes widely turgid, with many twists and turns. Sometimes we see nobleness, compassion, and integrity, and then we see unrelenting meanness, senseless wars, sexism, and genocidal racism.
Ebed-Melech: The Brother Who Rescued Jeremiah
These were terrible days In Jerusalem. Unrest and fear had placed a terrifying hand upon the people. There was corruption and sin in high places. To make matters worse, a Babylonian invasion seemed imminent. Jeremiah preached against the sin, and his prophecies about the invasion were not what they wanted to hear.
How Will I Know? (A Valentine’s Day Sermon)
Love is a constant topic of discussion. We write about it; talk about it in face-to-face conversations and on social media; we preach about it, as I am doing now; and of course, we sing about it in church and with our secular songs. Some of the great theologians have written tones about God’s love and how believers should reflect His love. Since love is so important, because everyone wants to be loved, why is true love so hard to find and to keep for so many people?
I Ain't Going Nowhere!
We must remember that Jesus had just fed several thousand people with two minnows and five barley muffins – a two-piece fish dinner. They were so impressed by what He had done and could do for them that they wanted to make Him king. When they learned that Jesus was not going to set up a political kingdom, that He was not going to continue to give them free food, and that He expected full commitment on their part, they stopped following him.
